Proposal for Sonic Landscape

Throughout our life there are sounds, which evoke memories. This is often said of smells. In my opinion, sounds possess a greater instigating force. Hearing a sound similar to one of your childhood may remind you of this stage of life. In addition, you may react to this sound. It is important not to overlook the fact that most sounds remain present throughout an entire life span.

Sounds possess rhythms of their own; they set the pace for our lives. During childhood, our parents make most decisions. This links our memories of childhood sounds to our parents. The only schedule capable of being followed by children is an auditory one. Concepts of time are much more complex. Each piece of daily events are divided and paced by sounds as opposed to chronological devices. Keys and locks may indicate the arrival of someone, a car can mark the beginning of a trip, and a bell could indicate the end of a particular session. Sounds have the ability to remind us of past environments.

In addition, it is while being surrounded by sounds that childhood dreams emerge. For this moment of life, this dream resonates as loudly as a rock concert. Eventually, one becomes deaf from this type of exposure. The dream morphs into but a small, barely audible, murmur.

I have found it important to explore how childhood is paced by sound and how these sounds transcend stages of life like childhood ideals.

For the audio project, one sound will maintain the beat. This single auditory cue is symbolic of the ability of childhood dreams to transcend age. Often, these dreams follow us our entire lives. The problem arises as more and more opportunities present themselves. These will be symbolised though the addition of sounds. Our brain concentrates automatically on new sounds, disregarding the previous one. Sharp sounds will break up the piece while more constant ones will establish the passage of time.

Specifically, the sounds I wish to use are:
  • Keys
  • Lock
  • Car
  • Laughter
  • Egg timer
  • Westminster clock
  • Kitchen food preperation
  • Bird
  • Footsteps
