Group Presentation for DB 3
For this project, Alexis and I were critiqued by Karen Lee. With Karen, we discussed Jail Text as well as Theton Watch. She felt that DB 3.3 pleasantly visualised the audio. For Karen, it was possible to distinguish music genres through this typographic effect. However, in her opinion, the concept of Meta information trapped within a song file was not properly conveyed. DB 3.4 was visually appealing for Karen but zooming effects could have been better executed.
Karen’s piece explored the concept of communication. She explained that this form of human interaction could be represented through Morse code. She tried to illustrate the learning process of a new language as well as the encoding and decoding phenomenon. In my opinion, the latter was conveyed through the use of alpha blending and dissimulation. The stress between reader and text is strong during the formation of dots and dashes. The randomness of appearance of dashes and dots did not reflect Morse code’s rhythmic and heavily structured system. It was also mentioned that the mouse clicking sound and rhythm was part of the work, like a Morse transmitter. This uncontrolled rhythmic action dependant on users reiterated my viewpoint that the encoding process must possess a structure to be understood by the receiver.
